    How to record this drill

Film 3+ complete reps without stopping. One rep is a preview — three lets the AI measure whether your quality holds up under repetition.

    Objective

Read the defender and select the right move — the move chosen depends on the defender's body shape, not a preset plan. Move execution still matters, but the read is the skill.

    Setup

Partner as active defender. Two cones 4-5 yards apart as the escape gate, 10 yards behind start. Ball.

    Instructions
    1. Set two cones 4-5 yards apart as the escape gate, 10 yards behind start
    2. Defender stands 4 yards in front of the attacker
    3. Approach at pace and choose the right move based on the defender's body position
    4. Execute, push the ball through the escape gate, accelerate past it
    5. Defender may not lunge early — wait until the attacker commits
    6. Attacker scores for each clean gate exit; defender scores for stopping the ball
    7. Switch roles every 5 reps
    What good looks like
    • Approaches at pace — real pressure on the defender
    • Short pause at 2-3 yards to read the defender's weight and body position
    • Move chosen based on the defender's commitment, not instinct
    • Explosive burst through the escape gate after the move
    Common mistakes
    • Choosing the move before reading the defender — reacting to real cues is the whole skill
    • Committing too early to one direction before the defender commits
    • Rushing the approach — the pause before the move is where the read happens
    • No acceleration through the gate — beating the defender only counts if you escape
    Equipment

    Foundation

    Level 1

Passive defender — holds position, attacker works on approach and timing.

    Form

    Level 2

Defender rocks weight (telegraphs) — attacker reads and exits.

    Tempo

    Level 3

Defender commits randomly left or right — attacker reacts.

    Pressure

    Level 4

    Active defender, no restriction.

    Match Rhythm

    Level 5

Active defender + finish on goal after the gate.

    Mastery

    Level 6

    Live small-sided game — same read-and-execute principles.

How the AI scores this drill
Primary metric: Move Selection And Gate Exit

    Technique

    30%

The chosen move is executed with correct mechanics for that specific move. Score is based on the quality of whichever move the player selected — not on which move was chosen.

    Decision Quality

    20%

Did the player select a move appropriate to the defender's body position and weight shift? The right move is one that exploits the defender's specific commitment — not just a habitual go-to.

    Ball Control

    20%

Ball stays within playing distance throughout the move. Exit touch is controlled and directed toward the gate.

    Explosive Exit

    20%

Acceleration through the escape gate in the first 3 steps after the move. Player commits to the burst — no deceleration before the gate.

    Balance & Control

    10%

Low centre of gravity and stable body throughout. Player under control during the move and at exit.
