    Objective

Receive on the half-turn so the first touch carries you forward into a passing line, not back to your marker.

    Setup

Two cones 8 yards apart — one server cone, one receiving cone. Wall or partner serves a firm ground ball.

    Instructions
    1. Place two cones 8 yards apart — one is the server, one marks your starting position
    2. Stand at the receiving cone with your back roughly to where you want to play forward
    3. Before the ball is served, check your shoulder and open your hips at a 45° angle (the half-turn)
    4. Receive with the back foot (the foot furthest from where the ball comes) and let the touch carry the ball into the open space in front of you
    5. Play forward with your second touch — never let the ball stop on you
    6. Reset and repeat off both feet
    What good looks like
    • Shoulder-check happens BEFORE the ball is served, not after
    • Hips open to roughly 45° toward the forward target
    • Back-foot first touch carries the ball 1-2 yards past the receiving cone
    • Second touch plays a forward pass without resetting the body
    Common mistakes
    • Receiving square-on so the first touch dies on the back foot
    • No shoulder-check before the ball arrives — body shape gives away the next pass
    • Receiving with the front foot, which traps the ball behind the standing leg
    • First touch stops the ball instead of carrying it past the receiving cone

    Foundation

    Level 1

Walk through the half-turn off a stationary ball — focus on hip opening and back-foot contact.

    Form

    Level 2

Receive a firm ground pass and carry the ball forward with one touch, dominant foot only.

    Tempo

    Level 3

Alternate feet — 10 clean reps per foot at game pace.

    Pressure

    Level 4

Add a shoulder-check call: partner shouts 'left' or 'right' before the serve and your touch must go that way.

    Match Rhythm

    Level 5

Live passive defender on your back — must still receive on the half-turn and carry past them.

    Mastery

    Level 6

Live active defender plus a forward pass to a target inside 2 touches.
