Most youth soccer players know the 40-yard dash and the beep test. Fewer know the 6-18-60 shuttle — a test that Stanford Men's Soccer has used for decades to assess pre-season fitness. It's harder to fake than a straight sprint, and it's more soccer-specific than almost any other common fitness benchmark.

What the 6-18-60 Shuttle Is
The 6-18-60 is a multi-distance shuttle run completed as a single continuous effort. Starting from the same line, you run:

Total distance: 168 yards. No stops. Timer runs from the first step.
In real physical terms: two sharp reversals (at 6 and 18 yards) followed by a full 60-yard sprint with no recovery between them. Your legs are already loaded from the direction changes by the time you hit the final sprint — which is exactly what makes it useful as a fitness test. It replicates the physical demand of a realistic game sequence.
How Stanford uses it
The Stanford Soccer Fitness Test includes the 6-18-60 shuttle multiple times across a sequence of alternating runs: a half-mile, then the shuttle, then a quarter-mile, then the shuttle again — repeated with short rest periods. The final half-mile performance determines your score. "Under 2:50 on the final half-mile is mid-team level." The shuttles are what strip your legs between the longer runs.

Women's targets: add approximately 2–4 seconds to each band. Stanford's program is a men's program; equivalent standards for women's D1 are approximately 34 seconds for mid-team level.

The 5-10-5 is excellent for isolating agility. The 6-18-60 is better at predicting how a player performs when the game demands repeated high-intensity runs — which is closer to what actually happens in a match. Use both if you can, but if you can only run one, the 6-18-60 tells you more about soccer fitness.
How to Set Up and Run the Test
Mark your course
Place a cone at the start line. Measure and mark cones at exactly 6, 18, and 60 yards from the start. Use a measuring tape, not pacing — accuracy matters for comparing times.
Surface
Grass or artificial turf. The same surface every time you test. Avoid concrete (injury risk on the plant-and-push turns).
Partner and timer
Have someone else operate the timer — starting at your first movement, not at a signal. Stopping when your foot crosses the 60-yard line.
Warm up fully
20 minutes minimum: jog, dynamic stretching, A-skips, B-skips, 3 short sprints at 70%, 80%, 90%. A cold test is a slow test.
Attempts
Take 2 attempts with 5 minutes of full rest between them. Record the faster time.
Technique on the turns
At 6 and 18 yards, plant hard with your outside foot and push immediately — don't slow down before the line. Touch the line with your hand only if required by the protocol; otherwise the foot-touch is fine.
What Slows Players Down (And How to Fix It)
Problem: Slow plant at the turns
Drill the 6-yard turnaround in isolation. Sprint 6 yards, plant, explode back. 10 reps, focus only on the plant mechanics. Speed comes after the pattern is wired.
Problem: Fading on the 60-yard sprint
Your legs are already loaded. The fix is building repeat sprint endurance: 6 × 60-yard sprints with 90s rest, 3× per week. The 60-yard fade disappears in 3–4 weeks.
Problem: Deceleration before the line
You're anticipating the direction change too early. Keep your eyes past the line, not at it — you'll naturally extend through the turn rather than braking into it.
Problem: Stiff hips slowing the turn
Hip flexor mobility work before every session. 2 × 60s couch stretch each side. Tight hip flexors limit your stride length on the 60-yard sprint.
6-Week Training Plan to Improve Your Time
Most players can take 2–4 seconds off their 6-18-60 time in six weeks of consistent, targeted work. The plan combines direction-change drills, sprint development, and the gym work that transfers directly to the test.
Weeks 1–2 — Base
Build direction-change mechanics and short-burst conditioning
Weeks 3–4 — Acceleration
Develop first-step explosiveness and 60-yard top-end speed
Weeks 5–6 — Specific

Recovery Between Sessions
- 48 hours minimum between speed sessions — adaptation happens during recovery, not during the session
- 8–10 hours of sleep is the single most impactful recovery tool available to a youth athlete
- 20–30g of protein within 30 minutes after a strength session accelerates muscle repair
- Active recovery on rest days: a 20-minute walk or light swim clears lactate better than full rest
