    Basic Dribbling

Moving with the ball in a straight line and around simple obstacles.

    10 Essential Beginner Soccer Drills

    1. Toe Taps

Stand with the ball in front of you. Tap the top of the ball lightly with alternating feet — left, right, left, right. Start slow and speed up as you get comfortable. This builds coordination.

    • Duration: 30 seconds to 1 minute
    • Goal: 20-30 taps without losing the ball

    2. Ball Rolls (Side to Side)

Use the sole of your foot to roll the ball from left to right, then use the other foot to roll it back. Keep the ball close and stay balanced.

    • Duration: 30 seconds each direction
    • Goal: Smooth, controlled rolls without the ball escaping

    3. Dribble in a Square

Set up 4 cones in a square (5-10 feet apart). Dribble around the outside, trying to keep the ball close. Go one direction, then switch.

    • Equipment: 4 cones, 1 ball
    • Duration: 2-3 minutes
    • Goal: Keep ball within arm's reach at all times

    4. Straight Line Dribbling

Set up two cones 20 feet apart. Dribble from one to the other, turn around, and come back. Focus on using both feet and keeping the ball close.

    • Equipment: 2 cones, 1 ball
    • Duration: 3-4 minutes
    • Goal: Complete 5-10 trips without losing control

    5. Cone Weave

Line up 5-6 cones in a row, about 3 feet apart. Weave through them with the ball, going around each cone. Walk at first, then gradually add speed.

    • Equipment: 5-6 cones, 1 ball
    • Duration: 4-5 minutes
    • Goal: Complete the weave without hitting any cones

    6. Wall Passing

Stand 5-10 feet from a wall. Pass the ball against the wall with the inside of your foot, then receive it when it bounces back. Use both feet.

    • Equipment: Ball, wall
    • Duration: 3-5 minutes
    • Goal: 20 passes with each foot without losing control

    7. Partner Passing

Two players stand 10-15 feet apart. Pass the ball back and forth using the inside of the foot. Focus on accuracy first, then add distance.

    • Equipment: 1 ball per pair
    • Duration: 5 minutes
    • Goal: 20 successful back-and-forth passes

    8. Target Shooting

Set up a goal (or use cones). Place the ball 10-15 feet away. Shoot at the goal, focusing on hitting the target rather than power. Use your laces (top of foot) for power, inside of foot for accuracy.

    • Equipment: Goal or cones, multiple balls
    • Duration: 5-7 minutes
    • Goal: Score 5 out of 10 shots

    9. Stop and Go

Dribble forward, then stop the ball with the sole of your foot on command (or count of 3). This teaches ball control and how to quickly stop during a game.

    • Equipment: 1 ball
    • Duration: 3-4 minutes
    • Goal: Stop the ball within 1 second of the command

    10. Juggling (Catch Allowed)

Drop the ball, kick it up once with your foot, and catch it. Repeat. As you improve, try 2 touches before catching, then 3, and so on.

    • Equipment: 1 ball
    • Duration: 5 minutes
    • Goal: Consistently get 2-3 touches before catching

Sample Beginner Practice Plan (30 Minutes)

    • 0-3 min: Warm-up — Toe taps and ball rolls
    • 3-8 min: Dribbling — Straight line and cone weave
    • 8-15 min: Passing — Wall passing or partner passing
    • 15-22 min: Shooting — Target shooting
    • 22-30 min: Fun game — Small-sided scrimmage or Shark Attack

    Tips for Beginner Success

    • Start slow: Speed comes after control. Walk before you run.
    • Use both feet: Even if one foot feels awkward, practice with it.
    • Be patient: Every pro was once a beginner who struggled with the basics.
    • Practice often: 10 minutes daily beats 1 hour weekly.
    • Have fun: If it's not enjoyable, motivation will fade.
