A goalkeeper's game intelligence is primarily organisational and anticipatory. A central midfielder's is holistic — the highest information environment on the pitch. A striker's is spatial and situational. A winger's is exploitative and 1v1-focused.
Training IQ by position is more efficient than generic soccer IQ training. Once you know the specific cognitive demands of your role, you can target your film study, your scanning habits, and your small-sided game design to the patterns that matter most for where you play.

Organisational IQ and distribution intelligence
Primary IQ demand: Reading opponent build-up shape and setting starting position based on ball location
Key IQ Components
- •Starting position — adjusting laterally based on ball location across the pitch, not just in the 18-yard box
- •Build-up distribution IQ — reading where the press is coming from and choosing the safe, forward option under pressure
- •Cross anticipation — reading body shape and flight of the ball to commit before it arrives
- •Communication — organising the back line's shape, step, and pressing triggers from behind
- •Game-state awareness — understanding when to risk short passes versus when to play long

- •Distribution under pressure — playing out from the back with correct body shape and forward passing decisions

Spatial and transitional IQ
Primary IQ demand: Reading when to attack and when to hold; understanding overlap and underlap timing
Key IQ Components
- •Overlap/underlap timing — reading the winger's position and the opposition's defensive shape to choose the right run
- •1v1 defensive IQ — showing the winger onto their weaker foot without over-committing
- •Cross timing — arriving late into the box to stay onside while the ball is in transit
- •Recovery speed IQ — getting back into shape after attacking without ball-watching on transitions
- •Switch recognition — spotting when to switch the ball to release the other flank

Primary IQ demand: Continuous scanning, decision speed under pressure, and field orientation across all phases
Key IQ Components
- •Scanning frequency — the highest demand of any outfield position; 4–8 head turns in the 5 seconds before every reception
- •Body orientation — receiving half-turned as a default, not as a special technique
- •Pressing trigger recognition — knowing when the opposition is triggerable and when to delay
- •Switch speed — seeing the switch option before the build-up becomes congested and executing with pace
- •Positional balance — staying between the lines in possession; recovering to central shape in transition

Watch your body shape in every reception. Are you open-hipped or closed? This one habit is the biggest IQ leverage point for midfielders.
Creative IQ — exploiting half-spaces between lines
Primary IQ demand: Reading when to play between lines vs. dropping to link; timing forward runs to stay onside

- •Line-breaking pass recognition — identifying the moment when the defensive midfield line has a gap and playing the ball through before it closes
- •Third-man-run timing — triggering a run at the right moment to receive as a combination develops, not as it completes
- •Half-space positioning — operating in the gap between the fullback and centre-back where pressure is hardest to apply
- •Reverse pass vision — seeing the pass that goes against the direction of pressure; wrong-footing the press
- •Press resistance — scanning before receiving to know which direction to take the ball under pressure

Watch your positioning when your team has the ball in wide areas. Are you in the half-space, ready to receive the combination? Or are you centrally positioned where defenders can mark you easily?
Situational and exploitative IQ
Primary IQ demand: Reading when to isolate the fullback vs. combine; timing runs in behind
Key IQ Components
- •Fullback body shape reading — knowing from the opponent's hips and weight distribution whether to run in behind, cut inside, or combine
- •1v1 moment selection — recognising when to take the defender on and when to play quickly to a third man
- •In-behind run timing — staying onside until the pass is played, not making the run too early and flattening the defense
- •Inside cut recognition — reading when the fullback has committed wide enough to create the cutting lane
- •Defensive transition recovery — understanding which angle to recover at to protect the central channel, not just sprinting back

Watch your first two touches after receiving wide. Are you scanning before the ball arrives? Do you know where the fullback is before you touch it?
Anticipatory and spatial IQ — attacking blind sides
Primary IQ demand: Reading defender movement and timing runs off the last defender
Key IQ Components
- •Blind-side run timing — reading when the centre-back shifts toward the ball and attacking the space they leave
- •Penalty box scanning — knowing where the goalkeeper is, where teammates are arriving, and which side of the defender to attack
- •Hold-up IQ — knowing when to protect the ball under pressure and when to lay it off based on teammate support positions
- •Off-the-shoulder run — attacking the defender's blind spot on through-balls so they cannot both watch ball and runner
- •Second ball anticipation — reading where a loose ball will drop based on trajectory and goalkeeper positioning

Watch your runs in each attacking phase. Are you reading the centre-back's position and moving into blind-side space — or are you running to where you can see, which is where the defender can also see you?
How to Use This Guide
Start with your primary position. Identify the two or three IQ components where you are weakest — either through self-assessment on film or by asking your coach directly.
