TRAINING PLAN

Striker Training Plan: 6 Weeks Built Around What Strikers Actually Do

A striker-specific training plan for youth players 12–16. Six weeks, one focus per week, honest about what transfers.

A striker plan has to look like the position. Most generic youth plans give strikers the same weekly block as every other player, and then nobody can figure out why the strikers don't improve at the things strikers actually need.

This plan is built around the six things coaches look at when they evaluate a striker, one per week. Every week has a specific technical target and a match-application component. Clip targets are included so the trend is measurable.

    What Coaches Evaluate

For Strikers, evaluators look at finishing technique, off-ball movement, hold-up strength, and first-touch in the box. Those overlap with what you can see on video, which is why the plan below uses weekly clip uploads to track improvement.

    The 6-Week Block

Each week has one focus. Individual sessions support the focus; team training is untouched.

    • Week 1: Finishing mechanics — placement over power, both feet
    • Week 2: Off-ball movement — runs, timing, body shape before the ball
    • Week 3: Hold-up play — back-to-goal receiving, laying off, shielding
    • Week 4: 1v1 vs keeper — angles, composure, finishing types
    • Week 5: Match application — 2 scrimmages, specific focus each
    • Week 6: Sharpen — shorter sessions, high quality, rested

    Clip Targets

Every week, weekly: one finishing drill clip, one match clip of the 3 seconds before a chance (whether or not it went in). By week 6, the clip trend should bend — first touch cleaner, decisions faster, positioning tighter. If it doesn't, the plan got blocked somewhere and you diagnose before restarting.

    What to Skip

Strikers under 15 do not need position-specific conditioning, advanced tactics, or specialist S&C work. That is the bait sold by academies that charge $200/hr. What produces real striker development at youth age is technique repetition against real pressure, plus film review of the position. Everything else can wait.
