Summer Soccer Training Plan: 10 Weeks of Real Development

A 10-week summer soccer training plan for youth players. Long enough to compound. Honest about what volume works at 12, 14, 16.

Summer is a 10-week offseason window in most youth soccer calendars, which makes it the biggest development block of the year. It is also where injuries happen, because parents and players under-respect the need for structure. A summer spent doing 'more' without a plan is a summer that produces a mediocre preseason and a patellar tendinitis.

This is a 10-week plan structured into three blocks: recovery, build, sharpen. Every block has a specific physiological purpose and a technical target.

    Weeks 1–2: Recovery and Audit

After a long club season, the first two weeks are about unloading. Three technical sessions a week, 25 minutes each, low intensity. No matches. Use the rest to audit the season — film review of 3–4 matches, identify the two biggest gaps, set the summer target.

    Weeks 3–6: Build Block

Four sessions a week, 40–45 minutes, alternating target skills. Introduce pressure gradually. Add one pickup game per week starting in week 4 to keep match sense alive. Clip upload every Sunday — the clip trend should bend by end of week 5.

    Weeks 7–9: Sharpen and Stress

Five sessions a week, shorter (30 minutes) and higher intensity. Two pickup or small-sided games per week. This is where the new technique gets stress-tested against real defenders. If the technique collapses under pressure, back off a week and reinforce with pressure drills.

    Week 10: Preseason Bridge

Taper. Extra sleep. Short sharp sessions only. Hit tryouts or preseason camp fresh. Compare week-1 clip to week-10 clip — after a structured summer, the difference should be visible.
