Summer Training for Center Backs: An 8-Week Position Plan

An 8-week summer soccer training plan for center backs. Position-specific technical, tactical, and physical blocks built for the summer window.

Center back is the position parents least often build a summer around — and that is exactly the opportunity. While forwards everywhere drill finishing, a defender who spends the summer on defensive footwork, heading, aerial timing, and clean distribution arrives in the fall a level above the center back who only played pickup. Defending is coachable, and summer is when it gets coached.

This is an eight-week periodised plan for center backs, distinct from the evergreen defender training plan on this site. That plan is season-agnostic; this one targets the summer window and adds the strength, jumping, and speed work a defender needs to win duels and recover when beaten.

What a Center Back Actually Needs to Build

Modern center backs defend and they build. The summer priorities are defensive footwork and body shape (jockeying, shepherding, staying side-on), aerial dominance (heading technique and jump timing), recovery speed for when the line is broken, and composed distribution off both feet. A defender who can win a header, recover a yard, and play out cleanly is worth two who can only do one.

    • Defensive footwork: jockeying, side-on shape, shepherding wide
    • Aerial timing and heading technique — attacking and defending
    • Recovery speed and turning to sprint
    • Distribution off both feet, short and long

    The Eight-Week Defensive Block

Weeks 1–2 build the base: footwork ladders into 1v1 defending, heading technique on served balls, and passing volume off both feet. Weeks 3–5 add live duels and pressure — defend real attackers, win contested headers, distribute under a closing press. Weeks 6–7 layer it into small-sided games where the defender organises and reads play. Week 8 sharpens reactions and recovery sprints.

The Physical Side for Center Backs

Center backs win the air and the duel, so jumping and strength matter more here than almost anywhere. Build vertical jump and aerial timing, develop the strength to hold off forwards, and train the recovery speed and turning acceleration that saves a broken line. The jumping and conditioning guides on this site give the specifics — two physical sessions a week, balanced against the on-ball defending work.
