Tryout Prep Training Plan: 6 Weeks to a Sharper Tryout

A 6-week tryout preparation plan focused on the skills coaches actually evaluate. Not magic — real preparation.

Tryouts reward sharp technique and visible work ethic more than they reward talent. A 6-week prep window is enough to raise your floor — to ensure your weakest visible skill is not the thing the evaluator notices. It will not turn a squad player into a starter, but it will close the gap that kept you off the roster last time.

This plan targets the four things most coaches evaluate in a 90-minute tryout: first touch, passing quality, 1v1 confidence, and off-ball work rate. Every week is built around one of those targets.

    Week 1–2: First Touch

Coaches form an impression of a player in the first 10 touches. If three of the first 10 are sloppy, the player is marked down before they do anything else. Two weeks of pure first-touch work: wall-ball with receiving angles, pass-and-turn reps, half-turn receptions under light pressure.

    Week 3: Passing Quality

Weight, direction, timing. Line-breaking passes. One-touch receive-and-play reps with a partner. Film a session mid-week and score your own passes — coaches count.

    Week 4: 1v1 Confidence

Tryouts put every player in multiple 1v1 situations. A player who refuses to take on the defender looks timid. Four sessions of 1v1 moves, both as attacker and defender, with the specific goal of improving one move you can execute under pressure.

    Week 5: Off-Ball Work Rate

Evaluators watch what you do without the ball. Off-ball work rate is one of the easiest things to visibly improve in 10 days — scanning, checking shoulders, sprinting back on defense, calling for the ball. Two scrimmages this week with the specific focus.

    Week 6: Sharpen

Cut volume. Short sharp sessions. Extra sleep. Show up rested. Take the tryout as if it's a league match you expect to win.
