Real improvement in youth soccer happens over weeks and months, not days. A player 10–16 who insists on seeing 'progress' every training session is going to quit before a single skill actually changes — because skill acquisition looks like nothing, then nothing, then a breakthrough. Daily tracking amplifies the noise and hides the signal.
The cycle that works is a 6-week block: set a skill focus, run a drill rotation, film 2–3 clips a week, check the trend at the 6-week mark. Skills that moved are confirmed — move on. Skills that didn't are the next block's focus.
Why 6 Weeks
Motor-pattern changes show up in the 4–8 week range for most youth-level technique work. Six weeks is long enough for the pattern to stick and short enough that the player stays engaged. Our training-plan system defaults to 4-week cycles for this reason with a re-evaluation at the end.
What to Film
Clean reps of the skill you're training, not highlights. The point of the clip is to see whether the mechanics are improving, not to collect goals. A boring 20-second first-touch clip from training is more useful than a goal in a match for tracking.
- One skill per clip — don't mix first-touch reps with shooting.
- Tripod at waist height, far enough back to see the full motion.
- Both feet — weak-foot clips matter more than strong.
Reading the Trend
After 6 weeks, look at the trend line for the focus skill. Up = keep training, the pattern is drifting right. Flat = change the drills or increase session density. Down = something upstream (fatigue, injury, burnout) is likely the real issue.

Not to read the dashboard every day. Not to push after bad sessions. To keep the 6-week rhythm going, sign off on the drill rotation, and leave the grading to the app. Involvement that tracks a player's skill score daily is counterproductive — especially at ages 10–13 where motivation is fragile.
