Rain cancels outdoor training. It doesn't cancel development. A full indoor session — ball mastery, strength, core — can be done in a living room, garage, or hallway. Some of the best close-control training in the world happens in tight indoor spaces where players have no choice but to develop a delicate touch.
Session Structure
5 min warm-up → 25 min ball mastery → 20 min strength circuit = ~50 minutes total (or split into two shorter sessions)
Set Up Your Space
Clear a 3×3 meter area — push furniture to the walls if needed. Put away anything breakable. Use a futsal ball or foam ball; if you only have a regular soccer ball, deflate it to about 50% pressure. Socks on hardwood are fine for ball work; bare feet are better for single-leg stability exercises.
Warm-Up (5 Minutes)
In a small space, the warm-up is mostly joint mobility: ankle circles (10 each direction), hip circles (10 each direction), leg swings holding a wall (10 each leg front/back, 10 each leg side-to-side), torso rotations (10 each direction), and 2 minutes of walking lunges around the space. No sprinting needed — you're preparing for skill work, not high-intensity running.
Ball Mastery Circuit (25 Minutes)
Run through each drill for the listed duration, then rest 15 seconds before moving to the next. Complete 2 full rounds. Total active time: ~24 minutes. This is where the session lives — treat it as deliberate practice, not casual juggling.
Alternate feet on top of the ball. Light, quick contacts.
Roll the ball across your body with the inside of the foot.
Pull back with the sole, redirect with the inside. Sharp cuts.
Roll ball forward with sole, pull it back. Body over the ball.
Sole stop, inside redirect at 90°. Emphasise the sharp angle.
Fake one direction, inside cut behind your standing foot.
Count your best run. Mix feet, knees, and thighs when confident.
Strength Circuit (20 Minutes)
Rest 45 seconds between exercises. The Bulgarian split squat and Copenhagen plank are the key exercises — prioritise them if time is short.
| Exercise | Sets × Reps | Key Point |
|---|---|---|
| Bulgarian split squat | 3 × 8 each leg | Rear foot on couch or chair. Drop straight down. Control the descent. |
| Push-up | 3 × 10 | Body rigid. Chest to floor. Slow on the way down (3 sec). |
| Single-leg glute bridge | 3 × 10 each leg | Drive through heel. Squeeze glute at the top. |
| Copenhagen plank | 2 × 20 sec each side | Top foot on couch. Inner thigh carries the load. |
| Dead bug | 2 × 10 each side | Lower back flat. Breathe out on extension. |
| Plank shoulder tap | 2 × 10 each side | Hips don't rotate. Stabilise from the core, not the hips. |
The Other Rainy Day Option: Film Review
If weather has cancelled a match or practice, this is also a perfect opportunity to review film. Watching your own clips with intention — looking for one or two specific improvement areas — is one of the highest-ROI development activities available to any player.
- What was your first touch doing under pressure?
- Were you finding space off the ball or waiting to receive?
- Where did your decisions break down — at the moment of receiving, or before?
- How was your body shape when you received the ball?
