FILM ROOM INSIGHTS

Use Soccer Game Film to Build an IDP

Learn how to turn soccer game film into one clear development priority, a focused training action, and better progress reviews.

    LevelUp EditorialPractical, youth-focused guidance

The best game-film question is not “Did I play well?”

It is “What repeated behavior should shape my next training week?”

    Start With the IDP Goal

Film can show almost too much. Begin with the player’s current goal so the review has a job. A midfielder working on scanning should not spend the entire session counting shots. A defender focused on recovery should not only watch the two tackles that made the highlight reel.

    Film question

Did I scan and adjust my body before the pass?

    Training action

Practice scan, receive, and play forward under a cue.

    A Four-Step Film-to-IDP Method

    1. Select representative moments

Choose ordinary possessions, defensive actions, transitions, and off-ball moments. Highlights can inspire, but repeated ordinary moments reveal habits.

    2. Review one theme

Watch at full speed first. Then pause only where the chosen question matters. Note what was available before judging the outcome.

    3. Name the pattern

Write a neutral observation: “I often receive square when pressure is behind me,” not “I am bad under pressure.”

    4. Build the next action

Choose a drill, a match-day cue, and a review date. If the pattern is tactical, the answer may require team or coach context, not just solo touches.

What to Watch Beyond the Ball

    • Before receiving: Did the player scan, move, and shape the body for the next action?
    • When the team has possession: Was the player available, connected, and creating useful space?
    • When possession changes: Did the player recognize the transition and react with purpose?
    • When the player is away from the ball: Did movement support the team’s next action?
    • After the moment: Can the player explain the choice without reducing it to “good” or “bad”?

These observations complement technical analysis. They do not erase the coach’s team model or the player’s position. For a complete review routine, use the game review checklist and the deeper film analysis guide.

Where AI Helps — and Where It Stops

AI-assisted video analysis can help surface patterns, organize moments, and provide a starting point for coaching feedback. That is especially useful when families cannot watch every frame or when a player needs a consistent way to compare clips.

It cannot know every instruction the coach gave, every role change, or what the player felt physically. Use the analysis as evidence in the IDP conversation, not as the final authority. LevelUp connects video cues to drills, weekly planning, goals, and progress history so the insight can become action without pretending the tool replaces a coach.
