What Not to Eat Before a Soccer Match

A youth soccer guide to foods that may feel uncomfortable close to kickoff, without turning nutrition into a universal good-food or bad-food list.

The phrase “what not to eat” can quickly become a list of forbidden foods. A better question is: what might make this player uncomfortable this close to kickoff?

Use Caution With Timing and Portion

    • Large meals immediately before competition
    • Very greasy or heavy fried foods
    • Extremely high-fat meals close to warm-up
    • Large amounts of fiber when the player is not used to it
    • Excessive amounts of sugary foods
    • Unfamiliar foods on game day
    • Anything this individual player already knows upsets their stomach

There Is No Universal Bad Food

A food can work after a match and feel heavy before one. A snack that suits one player may not suit another. The four useful filters are timing, portion, digestion, and individual tolerance.

Test the Plan Before Tournament Day

Use ordinary training sessions to learn whether a meal or snack feels comfortable. Then build the tournament plan from known options using the kickoff timing guide.

The pre-match meal has one job: help the player perform without making the stomach compete with the legs.
