    The Fuel Anywhere framework

Carbs = fuel. Protein = repair. Fluids + sodium = hydration. Timing = performance.

The goal is not perfect nutrition. It is knowing what your body needs, when it needs it, and how to find it wherever you are.

Tournament weekends turn a normal eating routine into a moving target. A family may leave before breakfast, play more than once, eat from a hotel or gas station, and drive home late. That does not mean the player needs a perfect menu.

Use one repeatable loop: fuel → play → recover → refuel.

    Work Backward From Kickoff

Food choices change as the match gets closer. Several hours out, a familiar meal can do more work. With less time, smaller and simpler options are often easier to tolerate.

    Time before activityFocusExamples
3–4 hoursFamiliar mealChicken sandwich and fruit; turkey sub and pretzels; rice bowl; bagel, eggs, banana, and yogurt.
1–2 hoursEasy-to-digest top-offBagel, banana, applesauce, pretzels, cereal, granola bar, or fruit.
<60 minutesQuick fuelApplesauce pouch, banana, pretzels, fruit snacks, chews, or a sports drink when appropriate.

    Recover Before You Feel Behind

After a match, begin with fluids and a familiar carbohydrate-plus-protein option when the player can comfortably eat. If the next game is hours away, follow that first snack with a more substantial meal. Recovery is not a reward; it is preparation for the next demand.

Pack the next choice before the player is hungry. Tournament decisions are easier when the family is not making them from an empty car or a crowded concession line.

    Use the Best Available Option

Hotel breakfast, a grocery store, a restaurant, and a gas station can all support the same goal. Look for carbohydrates for fuel, protein for repair, fluids for hydration, and timing that matches the next game. Start with the pre-game timing guide, then use the between-games guide when there is another kickoff ahead.
