A ten-minute grocery run can solve a tournament day. The trick is to shop by category, choose familiar foods, and buy enough backup options to handle a delayed game or a low-appetite moment.
Use Five Shopping Lanes
Carbohydrates
- Bagels, bread, or wraps
- Pretzels and crackers
- Granola or fig bars
- Applesauce
Fruit
- Bananas
- Grapes or berries
- Oranges
- The fruit the player actually eats
Recovery
- Greek yogurt
- Chocolate milk or milk
- Turkey
- Peanut butter or string cheese
Then add water, electrolyte packets or sports drinks when appropriate, a small cooler, ice packs, utensils, napkins, and a trash bag. Do not turn the cart into a test of discipline. Reliable food beats ambitious food that stays unopened.
Build One Meal and Two Backups
Choose one planned meal, one immediate recovery option, and two shelf-stable backups. That covers a lot of uncertainty without filling the cooler with more than the player can reasonably eat.
The fuel bag checklist is the reusable version of this grocery run.
Keep the Same Fueling Objective
At home, the meal might be chicken, rice, fruit, and water. At the store, it might be a turkey wrap, pretzels, banana, and water. Different food can support the same objective. Read the at-home versus on-the-go guide for more swaps.
